This Wednesday, February 15, 2023, the event of the VI Festa de la Mar, the traditional Catalan marine festival, was presented in Sant Salvador (El Vendrell). The event took place in the multi-purpose room of the Pau Casals House-Museum and was hosted by the Councilor of the City Council Bárbara Peris and the representatives of the Calafell Skate Association Josep Inglada, Arnau Josep Pou and Camille Bosch. At the same time, the event was attended by the mayor of Vendrell Kenneth Martínez, several representatives of the City Council as well as the sector group of the municipality's hospitality industry.
The Festa de la Mar is a gathering of traditional boats and the promotion of culture and maritime heritage that is convened every two years by the Catalan Federation for Culture and Maritime and River Heritage (FCCPMF). The sixth edition will be held between the 8th and 11th of June 2023 and the organization will be in charge of the Calafell Patí Català Association, the Calafell Town Council and will have the support and collaboration of the Vendrellen council.
In this edition, the Festa de la Mar is aimed at the towns of the Catalan coast and their people, from Rosselló to the Terres de l'Ebre, always reaching out to the towns of the Valencian coast, the Balearic Islands , in the rest of the Iberian Peninsula and throughout the Mediterranean. There will be a very extensive program of dissemination and exchange to make known and share everything that the sea has brought us and enriches us as a people. Likewise, this event aims to deepen the need to establish a more sustainable relationship with the marine environment, by spreading the use of traditional navigation as a tool for social inclusion among the most vulnerable groups and by claiming the role history of the women of the sea.
During the days of the Festival, visitors will be able to learn about Sant Salvador's seafaring past. The House-Museum of Pau Casals will host the exhibitions of the old pier of Sant Salvador, an infrastructure that supported a large part of the regional economy during the industrial period, as well as the photographic exhibition and the replica project of the Manuela, the last fishing boat from Sant Salvador. In addition, thanks to the archive of the Güixens family, Hotel Ra will host a photographic exhibition of the old fishing boats that were located in front of the old Sanatorium of Sant Joan de Déu. Finally, the Vendrell municipality will also host the exhibition of the 100 Boat Shipyard, in tribute to the figure of Ramon Forner.
