This year, in Stintino (Sardinia), from April 28 to May 1, the 40th edition of the well-known "Regatta della Vela Latina – Trofeo Presidente della Repubblica”, a benchmark for the events of this type of traditional navigation. Boats from all over the Mediterranean will attend this very special edition and among them will be one with a mixed Alghero-Catalan crew: the Santa Barbara, from the Accademia della Vela Latina del Mediterraneo, patronized by Carlo Muresu, one of the navigators of Sardinia's best known and most appreciated Latin sails.
Concep Márquez and Thais Buforn, partners and patrons of the Calafell Patí Català and Latin Sailing Association, have been invited to be part of the crew of this historic 1953 Carlofortina boat of 8.80 meters in length (not counting the botaló) as a twinning event between Alghero and Catalonia as part of the Catalonia Sea Festival, which this year will take place from June 8 to 11 in Calafell, and which is organized by the Catalan Federation for Culture and the Maritime and River Heritage.
The Stintino Latin Sailing Regatta
In 1983, the last small fleet of handmade "gozzi" still survived in the coastal town of Stintino, equipped with the typical triangular sails that have now almost disappeared from all other coasts of Italy. It was precisely to save that floating archaeological treasure and the intangible heritage of knowledge, that some young enthusiasts set up in just ten days the first edition of an event destined to enjoy a great international success of participation and image: the Regatta of the Latin Sail. For almost 40 consecutive years (except for the years of the pandemic), the Stintino Latin Sailing Regatta has become a benchmark for the recovery of this type of sailing, and gathers boats, crews and the general public who enjoy a program full of events together.
The driving force behind the initiative is the Associazione Vela Traditional Latina – Ecomuseum EMA (whose founder and president is Piero Ajello), with the support of the Stintino City Council and the Porto Torres marina.
